Begin Denies Pre-Knowledge of Beirut Massacre
Prime Minister Begin testified before an Israeli commission that he did not know in advance his defense minister sent Lebanese Christian militiamen into the Sabra and Chatila camps and did not envision a Palestinian massacre. He said he learned of the plan at a cabinet meeting on Sept 16 and learned of the massacre later from a BBC broadcast. He affirmed that intelligence did not warn him of such atrocities and noted his fear of revenge from Christian allies.
