The winners include Strom Thurmond Republican in U S Senate Butler Derrick Democrat for U S House Richard W Riley Democrat Governor Nancy Stevenson Democrat Lt Governor and various district counts for State House With local county and constitutional officers also listed along with amendment outcomes Amendments 1 through 5 show disapproval for 1 and approval for 2 3 4 and 5, with Busbee Trapp Hill appearing at the end as party markers.
In a high turnout race, Strom Thurmond defeated Charles Ravenel by about 50,000 votes as 55 percent backed Thurmond of South Carolina. The 75 year old Republican spent 1.5 million to Ravenel’s 1 million in the state's costliest campaign.
The county saw over 60 percent turnout as Democrats won most council and four state house races. Marshall Cain narrowly beat Irene Rudnick for District 85, while Thomas Huff defeated Cecil Collins in District 83 and Thomas Moore won District 84.
Aiken County state House Race 85 ends with 33 vote margin. Republican C Marshall Cain defeats incumbent Irene Rudnick after absentee ballots push final tally to 3740 for Cain and 3707 for Rudnick. Recount possible if margins fall under one percent. Cain to push education and tax reform agenda. Rudnick unavailable for comment.
