U S District Judge Frank Battisti granted acquittal motions for eight former Ohio National Guardsmen linked to the 1970 Kent State shootings. He ruled the government failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt a specific intent to deprive civil rights, noting no facts remained to be decided.
Secretary Kissinger and Israeli aides briefed on new negotiations with Egypt to arrange further Israeli troop withdrawal from the Sinai. They aim to begin soon with both Jerusalem and Cairo showing willingness. Talks focus on modalities rather than content, with Israel seeking a public nonbelligerency from Egypt or a de facto equivalent.
The United States and other major grain nations consider an emergency plan to limit foreign sales to make 7 million tons of wheat available in eight months to prevent starvation in Asia and Africa. The Environmental Defense Fund says Mississippi River drinking water may cause 15 to 20 percent of cancer deaths among white males in Louisiana river towns. Switching to ground water or filtering river water could avert about 50 deaths per year in New Orleans and reduce national cancer deaths among white males.
In Boston, 150 National Guardsmen on alert for school trouble will be withdrawn Sunday. A governor spokesman said they will be replaced by a small number of full-time Guard personnel as tensions ease under a court integration order. Governor Francis W. Sargent placed the Guard on alert Oct 15 due to racial fighting at Hyde Park High School.
Former President Richard Nixon, 61, is improving at Memorial Hospital Medical Center as doctors treat pneumonia and a partially collapsed right lung after surgery for phlebitis. Dr Lungren says he is responding to antibiotics but no discharge date is set for his return to San Clemente.
