Disney shifts princess era toward independent heroines
Disney films now center on sisterly, familial, and personal growth rather than romance. Writern Linda Woolverton and directors Jennifer Lee and Pete Docter cite daughters as inspiration for Maleficent Frozen and Inside Out. Executives argue modern heroines can still feature princes as part of life while offering empowering role models. Box office success for Frozen and Maleficent underscores audience appeal for stronger female-led narratives.
