Record turnout hits Aiken County as voters line up early

Gray skies greet voters as Aiken County anticipates a record turnout for the presidential race, state lottery vote, and local offices. Ben Christensen notes the process is working with no major problems, asking for patience as precincts report long lines and voters study constitutional amendment sheets. Decision Day Here in 2000 Presidential Vote

Washington voters faced a close choice between George W. Bush and Al Gore as they went to the polls on Election Day. Early returns from Dixville Notch and Hart's Location showed Bush leading. Gore campaigned in Carthage Tennessee while Bush urged turnout from Austin and across the West. The race, seen as one of the tightest in 40 years, centered on who could unite and who could fight for voters as tens of millions cast ballots nationwide.

Area Flu Shot Clinics Schedule Both Counties

Flu shot serum is in and the Aiken and North Augusta health department offices begin vaccinations next week. North Augusta shots at 802 E Martin-town Road Suite 170 on Nov 17 and 29 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Aiken County Health Department offers shots on Nov 15 22 29 and Dec 6 13 20 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Priority to high risk seniors 65 and older nursing home residents chronic heart circulatory or respiratory conditions and pregnant women in later trimesters. Vaccines cost 10 each with Medicare covering flu and pneumonia vaccines for beneficiaries. Additional vaccines include pneumonia MMR and tetanus.

In South Carolina the 1st District sees longtime Republican Henry Brown facing Democrat Andy Brack for the seat of retiring US Representative Mark Sanford. Brack is a former journalist and Hollings press secretary. Sanford leaves after three terms.

Vote tampering charged in tight Florida race

Sen Tommy Moore of Clearwater accused Republican campaign aides of voter tampering in District 25. He said calls misinform seniors that Republicans vote Tuesday and Democrats Wednesday, and he predicted state law enforcement and Justice Department scrutiny. A GOP official denied the accusations as unfounded.
