City Council OKs Lower Millage Rate Amid Absences

Aiken City Council approved a ordinance cutting the tax millage to 79 despite two absent members and no resident participation. The 11 mill drop may not save all residents as higher property valuations could raise city taxes. Finance Director Anita Lilly warned higher appraisals increase tax bills, while Mayor Cavanuagh stressed caution. To limit risk, council tied the cut to a rollback if tax receipts rise 1 percent over last year. The city also set January 15 as the first late tax penalty and moved tax notices to November 15 for one year.
