The Southeast Hobby Fair drew large crowds despite morning showers. Vendors displayed gems tapestries and other items while enthusiasts such as Lee Swopes of Aiken and Mike Lane of North Carolina shared stories of gem cutting and Alaska prospecting. Lane highlighted North Carolina as rich in gem stones and described his transition to ring making after moving across several states.
The State Department says President Carter will delay his nine nation tour to remain in Washington while Congress debates his energy program. Earlier reports indicated the plan to scrap the trip.

Eight people died including six children when mobile homes were swept away and a Burke County creek found three teenage boys’ bodies at Morganton at 5:30 a.m. Other fatalities occurred in Buncombe County near Asheville where a mobile home was torn from its foundation by North Hominy Creek.

An attempted armed robbery at the Aiken Holiday Inn failed when a victim blocked entry. two Atlanta men were robbed in a similar incident on Oct. 31.

Two young men, Ernest W. McIntosh and Randolph G. Carver, were arrested and charged with kidnapping Barbara Snipes after she was abducted from the York Street Caper House. McIntosh faces assault and battery charges. both tied to a conspiracy to rob. no money was taken.
Amoco Plastics Products in Beech Island eyes a multi million expansion including warehouses and a new manufacturing site. Plant manager Charles Ensor says a new product will be added but specifics remain undisclosed. Funding from Amoco Chemicals pending with a possible two to three month decision. Aiken County issued a 250000 building permit for initial construction as plans proceed.
The forecast calls for a high in the low 80s with cloudy skies and only a 10 percent chance of rain. Tonight's low around the upper 50s. The outlook shows partly cloudy Wednesday and Thursday with scattered showers Friday. highs mostly in the 70s.
Polls open at 8 a.m. for Aiken's City Council race with three seats contested. Incumbents William C. Clyburn Frampton W. Durban Hastings Wyman and challenger Judy W. Allen face a low profile campaign highlighted by a Meet the Candidates forum at St. Angela Academy.
The northeastern Georgia town of Toccoa reels as an earthen dam failure floods the sleeping community, destroying the college campus and causing 37 deaths.
At least 37 people died including 20 children after a dam above Toccoa Falls failed. Gov. Busbee inspected the scene as Rosalynn Carter visited and federal aid was promised. Crews searched for victims as power and gas remained out and many homes were damaged. Three volunteer firemen were among the dead.
