House Deliberates Social Security Rise and Tax Changes
A House Ways and Means panel nears final approval of Social Security legislation to boost benefits by 10 percent in mid 1974 and raise payroll tax base in January. The committee backed the Republican plan 13 to 12, with a full House vote expected next week. The bill would raise the taxable earnings base to 13 200 from January 1, 1974 and keep the 5.85 percent tax rate, increasing both employee and employer contributions. Democrats urged a 12 percent two step increase variant with similar financing.
