Legal actions continue as couples seek recognition of out of state marriages and access to marriage licenses in South Carolina. Attorneys clash over federal versus state jurisdiction while suits target the states enforcement of the same sex marriage ban. Colleen Condon and Nichols Bleckley seek a preliminary injunction in Charleston to allow marriages pending court rulings. DMV surname cases involve three individuals from out of state marriages challenging name usage on licenses with responses due in November and December.
Beaufort County voters approved borrowing $20 million to buy environmentally sensitive land or secure conservation agreements. More than 73 percent backed the measure, part of a long running program that has spent over $130 million in 15 years to prevent development and preserve about 22,000 acres.
Voters in Spartanburg and Greenwood counties approved referendums to allow Sunday alcohol sales in bars and restaurants, with Lake City and Sumter also approving. In Spartanburg County about 10,000 votes supported the measure. Lake City would allow beer and wine sales in restaurants and stores. Permit applications will be handled by the Department of Revenue, aiming to boost restaurant business.
