Houndslake Developer Missed Golden Chance with Nicklaus
Robert E. Penland discussed 1973 plans to attach Jack Nicklaus to Houndslake, while aiming for Arnold Palmer. He started the golf course project with Bob Jones in 1973, the course began July 4, 1973 and finished in 1975. Penland noted local doubts about his finances but pursued his dream. He purchased the Houndslake property in 1962 for 155000 dollars and later moved to Aiken to develop. The Houndslake community now stands as a premier local golf course in Aiken County.
