Voters Reject Public Hospital Bond Issue In Aiken County

Voters keep the new Aiken County Hospital privately financed and run by HCA. Bond supporters took a slim lead early, but final tallies 7306 for bonds and 9002 against bonds kept the hospital out of county hands.

Hospital Issue Remains Unsettled in Aiken County Vote

Dr. F A Kennedy and Dr. Robert O Lipe urge that the Aiken County Hospital issue is far from settled after a referendum asking up to 7.8 million in general obligation bonds to finance a county hospital failed 9 002 to 7 036. Critics call the vote a political signal while supporters point to differing petitions and a judicial review pending at the Lower Savannah Regional Planning and Development Board meeting on November 14.

Edwards Wins South Carolina Governor Race Beats Dorn

James B. Edwards, a Charleston dentist and Republican, defeats veteran Democrat Wr. Bryan Dorn to become South Carolina governor the first GOP winner in a century. With 1,605 of 1,639 precincts reporting Edwards leads Dorn 259,051 to 240,206 as Democrats claim most other statewide offices.

Demos Win All Aiken County Commissioner Seats

Democrats swept the five Aiken County Board of Commissioners seats, taking the at large and four district races from Republican incumbents. Forest L. Kirby defeated Jo Ann Price in Area No 1, Cleve Edmunds beat Edwin E Farmer in Area No 2, L. V. Davis won over L. J. Murphy in Area No 3, and Lucas Ray narrowly defeated Carroll H. Warner in Area No 4. Davis led in Clearwater, and Edmunds led from North Augusta Belvedere areas as totals grew.

Dist 85 recount planned in Aiken County election

In a delayed result the 85th district race between Irene Rudnick and Marshall Cain triggered a recount discussion after Rudnick led by 52 votes. Final tallies showed Rudnick 3019 to Cain 2960 with several challenged ballots potentially altering margins. Election officials planned to certify at the courthouse and decide on contested ballots amid nearby miscounts.

Voters Approve Regional Wastewater Treatment Plan

The Horse Creek Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant won approval with 12 091 votes to 3 059. The Aiken County Public Service Authority may issue revenue bonds to fund the plant, avoiding a tax increase for residents as industrial users repay most of the loans.
