Voters flood polling places as polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Aiken County for the 2008 general election. Officials project 80 percent turnout with about 15 000 absentee ballots cast by 3 p.m. Monday as anticipation rises for a historic election.
Aiken Public Safety prepares for higher turnout and possible traffic delays at polling places. Lt. David Turmo says officers will monitor flow but expect no major problems while voters may park away and walk. Rain is forecast with an 80 percent turnout projection and mild temperatures.
Aiken Taxi Service LLC and Carolina Cab LLC advertise discounts to voters needing rides. Aiken Taxi Service offers a 10 percent discount with a call to arrange transport to polling locations, while Carolina Cab LLC expects many riders will be seniors already eligible for discounts.
