Aiken County backed Bush with 5 723 votes to 14 795 for Clinton in the general election, part of a poorer GOP showing nationwide. The county had earlier backed Bush in 1988, defeating Dukakis 27 638 to 10 583, before a later 6 000 vote slip reflected national economic concerns and demand for change.
incumbent Irene K. Rudnick retained her South Carolina House seat in a tight race against Eric Pant Ruane. Rudnick captured 11 of 16 precincts around Aiken to win a ninth term with 7 136 votes to 5 698 for her challenger.
Incumbent Representative Rudnick won a strong win in Aiken precincts 2 3 4 5 and Six Points 46 while Radford carried five Aiken boxes. Rudnick collected 2 904 votes to Radford 1 095 amid post election remarks promising accessibility and service. She plans to tackle South Carolina's 200 million budget shortfall upon return to Columbia.
