Smithsonian Finds 18-Foot Wingspan Pseudodontorn Fossil

A 30 million year old pseudodontorn fossil from a Charleston, South Carolina site reveals the largest known flying seabird with an 18 foot wingspan. Scientists from the Smithsonian Institution and Charleston Museum identify skull, jaw, leg, wing bones and estimate nearly 90 pounds.

Safe opened of Rudy Vallee collection yields love letters

The sealed 1942 safe held love letters from Dorothy Lamour Hedy Lamarr and Alice Faye among Vallee memorabilia. The Thousand Oaks Library bought Vallee sheet music recordings and material for 275000 and will return the letters to the actresses. Vallee died July 2 1986 at age 84.

In Aiken's general election Democrats gain the mayor's chair and two city council seats. Ronald Maxwell and Dr. Frank A. Loudermilk III win council posts. incumbent Republican Michael Anaclerio is reelected. Dems hold 3 seats to 3 Republicans as voter turnout nears thirty percent.

38 Year Veteran Defeats Challenger In Aiken Mayoral Race

H Odell Weeks, serving 38 years as Aiken mayor, won re election with 67 percent of the vote to Republican Robert S Skipper Perry Jr s 33 percent. About 30 percent turnout produced 2638 Weeks votes to 1291 for Perry. Perry carried two precincts and tied one.

Edgefield Mayor Reelected as Two Councillors Defeated

Edgefield voters re-elected Mayor William A Reel with 538 votes. In Ward 2, Lynda Lee defeated Charles Mathis 62 to 34, and in Ward 6 Robert Thomas defeated John Pettigrew 57 to 37, making Lee and Thomas the first Black council members in Edgefield County. Only incumbents John Ellis and Kenneth Peeler return.

Falwell Leaves Moral Majority to Return to Gospel

Washington AP reports Rev. Jerry Falwell is leaving the Moral Majority to focus on preaching at his Lynchburg Virginia church, Liberty University and ministries including a national crisis line for pregnant teens and addicts. He says his first love is back to the pulpit and soul winning.

Incumbents and newcomers elected to Edgefield board

Four incumbents and three newcomers won in the Edgefield special single member district school board election. Incumbents Noel Crouch Wall and Bunch held seats while Dorothy Owens George Smith and Betty Jo Costello joined the board. George Smith led the field in District 3 with 464 votes and played a key role in the single member districting suit.

Dennis resigns Finance Committee chair amid health worries

State Sen. Lambert Dennis is stepping down after 18 years as Senate Finance Committee chairman. The 72 year old, injured in two vehicle crashes, will remain Senate president pro tempore and finish his four year term ending 1988. He will decide by Jan 1 whether to seek re election from his Lewisfield Plantation home near Moncks Corner.
