Generalissimo Francisco Franco underwent a three hour operation at night to stop abdominal bleeding. Doctors reported his pulse, heart rate, and temperature were normal after the procedure and that over six quarts of fluid were drained. He spoke briefly with family and his condition remained grave overall.
Police used tear gas and arrested at least seven after a crowd of several thousand protested bus integration plans during an election eve rally in southern Jefferson County. The march to Southern High School ended with police in riot gear blocking buses and confrontations.
In Buenos Aires President Isabel Peron remains under hospital care after a 2:15 a.m. rush to a clinic. Officials say she has gall bladder trouble but not serious while sources note severe nervous strain from political tensions. By late Monday she signed several decrees and the presidential log.
Secretary Kissinger reportedly will provide a dissented State Department memo to the House intelligence committee as a potential answer to its subpoena.
