Voters face questions on a county owned hospital funded partly by general obligation bonds. If issued, a 13 mill tax increase would apply to homes of various values to support a $7.8 million bond plan over 20 years.
South Carolina voters defied expectations with unlikely nominees Charles Ravenel and James Edwards winning party primaries while veteran figures Morris and Westmoreland failed to attract solid backing. Ravenel faces residency issues and plans a symbolic write in for Bryan Dorn. Edwards wins Republican nod amid intra party discontent. Independent Peggy Jennings remains unlikely but may draw more votes than past minority candidates. House races add to potential confusion.
Voters will cast ballots tomorrow 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Aiken County for five House districts and two referendums on hospital funding and a regional wastewater plant. Key races include Cain versus Rudnick in District 85 and Collins versus Snelling in District 83.
A ballot guide lists candidates for governor lieutenant governor U S senator attorney general secretary of state treasurer comptroller general superintendent of education adjutant general agriculture and congressional district races. It also covers county commissioners state house districts and proposed constitutional amendments in a detailed, nonpartisan roll.
Opal M. Babb of 812 Board Man Rd wins this week’s football contest by guessing all Aiken Standard games correctly and missing the tie breaker by six. Ed Gardner also matched all games but missed the tie breaker by 18. A new contest appears to morrow.
Cecil M Etherredge a 70 year old Aiken businessman on Silver Bluff Road died Sunday in Aiken County Hospital. He had lived in Aiken since 1939 and led Hutson Etherredge Agency. He served as director for SC Electric & Gas and the Aiken National Bank branch. He was WWII veteran and past president of the Aiken Business Men's Club. Funeral 4 pm tomorrow at Bethany Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Robert L Cate officiating. Survived by Virginia Harley Etherredge widow and other relatives.
William O. Christy of North Augusta, a former Aiken County Hospital Board member, argues a private hospital is the only path forward as citizens reportedly resist public bond issues. He says funding via gifts or government money is unlikely and anticipates a private facility within months.
