Penguin rover spies on shy emperor birds in Antarctica
Researchers led by Yvon Le Maho of the University of Strasbourg developed a gray fur covered chick shaped rover to approach Adelie Land emperor penguins from 650 feet away. The device sparked singing from penguins while avoiding disturbance. The team seeks nonintrusive data on heart rate health and behavior, noting earlier fiberglass versions frightened the birds. Next designs may include sound playback to attract mates.
