Aiken County Election Commission computer ran into problems during a Friday test though a media test earlier that day succeeded. Officials from both parties voiced concerns while an Ohio firm designed the $40 000 program. A further test is planned Tuesday at 7 p.m.
In Long Beach California a high school principal questions anger over a prank hoax announcing Russia had declared war on the United States. The Friday incident caused tears among students during Homecoming Week as Margaret Comer of the Dominguez High School advisory committee denounced the prank as disgraceful while Principal Fred Easter defended it as tradition.
Forecasters indicate a 50 50 chance of sun or rain with partly cloudy skies on election day and a high in the mid 70s. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low in the mid 50s. Details on page 6A.

Eugene Hasenfus testified he had no direct knowledge of CIA ties to rebel supply operations during the trial before Nicaragua's revolutionary tribunal. Prosecutors promised flight logs and seized weapons would be introduced as evidence, while Hasenfus, 45, previously described as the sole survivor of a mission to aid Contra rebels, faces charges alongside three dead crew members.
State Election Commission spokesman Conway Belangia says turnout likely to be about 55 percent of registered voters or 715000 to 720000, typical for non presidential years. Local races in districts 1 and 4 could push turnout higher and campaigns warn apathy may hurt both major parties.
