Republican Jerry Michael Toole defeated incumbent Democrat Billie K. Trapp in District 5. Trapp cited Ethics Commission charges over her June budget vote for her defeat. The election shifts one seat toward Republicans but preserves the 5-4 party-line control.
Richard W. Dick Riley won a statewide victory for the Democrats in South Carolina’s 1982 general election, securing a record fourth term and carrying the 6th District. Mike Toole Marilyn Smith Medwell Hill Fay Hatcher won county council seats in Aiken County, with several school board winners and a lone contested House race.
After midterm elections Democrats expanded House control while Republicans kept the Senate. White House aides call Reagan upbeat and vote for staying the course, while Democrats label the result a call for change. House results show Democrats with 246 seats and chances to gain. Senate majority looks 54-46 for Republicans with some races undecided. Strongest gains occur in statehouses with seven Republican governors captured.
