Rescue Hampered In Northern Canada

Officials at Edmonton said radio contact reached survivors of a Hercules C 130 crash in far northern Canada. Windblown snow and zero visibility halted rescue teams from reaching the wreck while survivors sheltered inside the aircraft awaiting better weather for parachute drops.

Only 6 Kuwaiti Wells Still Out Of Control

Hundreds of firefighters who tamed Kuwait oil fires wore oil soaked caps and shared a farewell bash after finishing months ahead of schedule. Officials said six wells remained out of control as Iraqi forces had damaged or set ablaze 732 of Kuwait's 940 wells in February, cutting the emirate’s main income source.

Restart of K Reactor Considered at 30 Percent Power

The K Reactor at Savannah River site could restart at 30 percent power after more than two years of repairs. Westinghouse Savannah River Co expects work to finish by Nov. 10 and will seek DOE permission to ramp up slowly. Board chairman John Conway cites 30 percent as a safe, proven level given the vessel design and operator training, seismic tests, and safety measures.
