The Savannah River Plant hosts vast land with abundant wildlife including bald eagles. Managers restrict fishing to a few at the Ecology Lab, but workers report excellent catches at Par Pond and suggest opening waters to public angling by lottery while noting L Lake currents limit fish and raise safety concerns due to high temperatures and amoebas.
The Capers Artificial Reef near Capers Island gains a 154-foot steel barge donated by Ashley River Industries to South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources. The barge, prepped by the donor, towed by McAllister Towing, and sunk in 40 feet of water, expands the reef 12 miles off Capers Island. Previously added were a 200-foot barge from Salmons Dredging Corp and 16 large steel structures sunk by the Charleston Naval Base.
The SC Wildlife and Marine Resources Department reports fishing conditions at Piedmont Lake Jocassee Hartwell Richard B Russell Clarks Hill Lake. Largemouth bass good to excellent with various lure recommendations. crappie also good. bream and catfish present. Water levels vary with hydro station operations and are generally clear.
