More than 40 City of Aiken workers left in eight months, including 21 from Public Safety, with turnover costing hundreds of thousands yearly. Officials highlighted an 18-19 percent overall rate, above the national 13 percent, prompting calls to improve pay and career paths amid hiring by Bridgestone and other firms.

Duane Russell Grice, 44, remains at large after escaping from South Carolina Highway Patrol custody in Aiken County. Grice was detained Monday on outstanding arrest warrants including failure to stop for blue lights and possession. Police warn the escapee could be armed and urge anyone with information to contact authorities.
Aiken and Edgefield area obituaries list James Daniel Adams and James Robert Forstner with services announced. Harriett Hussey and Erma Dean Crider Steedly are noted among local memorials in Bamberg and Aiken with funeral details to follow. Franklin Wren also named in regional necrology.
Ronnie Young, long time Aiken County Council chair, won the House District 84 special election defeating Democrat Jennifer Larissey and Constitution candidate Lance Weaver. Unofficial results show Young with about 60 percent of the vote, 1,482 ballots. Larissey about 38 percent, 959 votes. Weaver 90 votes. Turnout was low with 2,548 ballots cast of 25,536 registered voters. The district seat opened after former Rep. Chris Corley faced felony charges. Corley resigned earlier this year.
