Japan Volcano Erupts on Kuchinoerabu Island
Mount Shindake on a southern island erupted Friday, ejecting rocks and ash five miles high. Authorities ordered evacuations as 133 people were moved by Coast Guard vessel and local ferries. One injured man with minor burns and another unwell person were airlifted to Yakushima. The alert level was raised to five, and a military helicopter surveyed the area. Nobuaki Hayashi said about 120 residents gathered at an evacuation facility.
