Jurors in the Timothy McVeigh case are due to begin deliberations today after closing arguments. Prosecutors and defense attorneys outlined their final positions, with the judge scheduling potential verdict announcements in the coming days.

The 1996 poverty level is 12980 for a family of three and 15600 for four. In Aiken County 21 percent of children ages 0 5 and 33 5? percent of children 6 17 live below the poverty line. Cognitive Skills Assessment shows 30 percent of county children are not ready for first grade, about 529 of 1307 new students. 33 5 percent had less than adequate prenatal care and 21 6 percent of births were to mothers who did not finish high school.
Legislators reach a pact to begin phasing out auto property taxes with a cost over 651 million in 2006. A House maneuver failed to force an earlier start, while Senate leaders push to proceed with the Senate plan amid wrangling over timing and funding.
A whistleblower lawyer told a federal judge that taxpayers were bilked by Westinghouse Savannah River Co. in contracts at the Savannah River Site, with alleged overruns of more than 100 million and up to 350 percent in one case. The judge took the Westinghouse motion under advisement as briefs are filed.
Richard Miley asserts plans to prove as much as 100 million in damages while Bell contends the claim lacks merit unless money was lost. Miley argues the act applies to knowingly submitted false statements to gain approval, and Harrison says Westinghouse knew costs would rise.
The panel weighs an early auto tax relief in January 1998 and a two year elimination of state income taxes for seniors 65 and older earning up to 11 500. The plan would cost 62 million and faces opposition over funding by raising other taxes. House leaders warn against substituting one tax for another as discussion continues. The budget must win the governor's approval by July 1.
