Bracey Johnson, 53, of Couchton, was found dead outside his home early Saturday with major head injuries. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office reported blunt head trauma from a skull fracture as the cause, per Chief Deputy Coroner Tim Carlton. Page 5A.
The Associated Press reports holiday traffic deaths across South Carolina with at least two fatalities. Shannon P Williams was northbound on Partis Bridge Road in Spartanburg County when a vehicle crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Earlier, Friday, 33 year old John Lowell Fitzgerald was a passenger when a car overturned on State Highway 18 in Cherokee County around 10:30 p.m. Fitzgerald was ejected.

The Aiken City Council will consider approval of the 2001 2002 budget today with a preliminary draft of 31.4 million dollars presented by City Manager Roger LeDuc at a May 1 work session. The plan shows a 0.8 percent funding increase over the current year and 4.65 percent over the last two years, with no tax increase but a net rise of two full time and three part time employees and a 2 percent wage adjustment. Residential and commercial garbage fees would rise 6 percent, taking residential service from 8.25 to 8.75 dollars per month and commercial from 1.82 to 1.93 dollars per cubic yard.
Aiken residents find plentiful locally grown peaches on produce displays despite dry cold weather. Prices range from 1.29 to 1.99 per pound for South Carolina Georgia and Florida fruit, while California peaches exceed 3 per pound.
