Lightning hits SRS DWPF plant. workers evacuated in overnight outage

A thunderstorm struck the Savannah River Site at about 2 20 a m causing a lightning surge that knocked out several buildings including the Defense Waste Processing Facility. More than 50 workers were evacuated. Investigators believe the surge traveled underground avoiding rooftop lightning rods. The plantwide computer system was down for hours. 78 canisters of waste glass have been completed to date, with 150 expected before Sept 30 to keep operation profitable at a cost of 2.8 million dollars weekly.
