Budget clears Senate and heads to conference panel

The $3 billion fiscal year state budget cleared the Senate nine days before adjournment and moves to conference with the House. Lawmakers aim to resolve differences, notably over the capital expenditure fund. Senate rewrote the plan to curb allocations from $41 million to $13 million, while preserving the fund. Senate surplus arose after trimming a $14.1 million deficit and delaying state employee raises.

Democratic candidates borrow heavily in S.C. governor race

Three of four Democratic candidates for governor report loans around 200000 each to aid campaigns as Lt. Gov. Mike Daniel leads in donations with over 589000 raised. Lader/Eppes/Leatherman also file contributions and loans, with Eppes stressing not buying the election. Primary set for June 10.
