Advisory referendum may not bind Aiken schools tax vote
Aiken County voters in November will face an advisory referendum on allowing the school board taxing authority. The General Assembly will decide the exact wording and whether to grant a five mill increase for schools. Delegation members say the advisory vote will not compel legislation but may indicate public sentiment. Clifton Williamson notes the measure aims to gauge public pulse, not decide policy. Representative Huff says the delegation will not be compelled to act solely on the advisory question.
