Class action suit rejected against Westinghouse SRS firms

Federal Judge Cameron Currie rejected class action status for nearly 100 black workers at the Savannah River Site against Westinghouse Savannah River Co and Bechtel BNFL and BWTX. Each plaintiff must file individual suits within 39 days. Westinghouse spokesman Callicott welcomed the ruling as a step toward resolving issues.

Memorial Day Events Kick Off In Aiken With Festival Parade

The Memorial Day Festival and downtown parade start today in Aiken with a noon festival on Newberry Street featuring food stalls cold drinks and live entertainment. Band performances include Southern Sound the Fort Gordon Signal Corps Band and Pan Celtic Pipe and Drum Band. A water spray fire truck dunking booth and watermelon seed spitting contests highlight the day.

Memorial Day closings announced for Aiken area

Many local entities including the Aiken Standard will be closed for Memorial Day. The newspaper will publish Monday but its offices will close. offices of Aiken County and city government, the post office, banks, and the Aiken County Library along with the H Odell Weeks Activity Center will also be closed. Normal hours resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

Condon asks Supreme Court to hear video gambling suit

South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon said the Supreme Court should hear the video gambling operators challenge to the July 1 ban in Greenville Circuit Court, arguing the decision should be quick and final. The operators seek to lift the ban, claiming takings and equal protection issues.

Aiken County to buy Langley Pond site for park facility

Aiken County plans to acquire a 10 acre tract at Langley Pond from Lombard Corp for a long range recreational complex. The project aims to resemble a new industry with a $250000 development budget funded by forthcoming sources. The site behind Bell and Surasky law offices and a Food Lion will include a roped off beach picnic areas playgrounds and storage for Olympic rowing shells.
