President Nixon marked Memorial Day in Key Biscayne Florida calling Americans to assume global leadership duties as atomic weapons spread he warned isolation could lead to world destruction and urged Congress to uphold a strong America in a radio address from the Florida White House bayside study.
Militant Protestant leaders in Belfast urged a major escalation of the 13 day strike. The Ulster Workers Council called for a total power blackout in retaliation for the British government sending troops to seize Northern Ireland oil depots and filling stations. They urged workers to refuse all services, even essential ones.
Vice President Gerald R Ford declared he would uphold his disapproval of President Nixon’s move to bar further Watergate evidence from the House impeachment inquiry. He said differences were aired candidly at his meeting with Nixon last Thursday and he has not backed off since.
A mild quake rattled Mexico City on Sunday night swaying downtown skyscrapers. There were no reported victims or damages.
Mercer Ellington said Duke Ellington's band would tour to fulfill a Tuesday engagement at an IBM convention in Bermuda. He stated his father would have wanted the music to continue and that the band would carry on despite the funeral. Edward Kennedy Ellington III, Duke's grandson, plays guitar with the group.
Detroit AP reports about 8 100 General Motors employees slated to return Tuesday after UAW Local 15 ratified a contract ending a 13 day strike by 4 000 workers. UAW officials declined to disclose vote margins. Additional 4 000 at Cadillac and 100 on the Toronado line in Lansing were laid off due to the strike.
Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey urges Americans to give up one martini a year to boost foreign aid. He notes wavering support after a January House vote against a $1.5 billion IDA replenishment. IDA, a World Bank subsidiary, lends to the poorest nations with per capita income of about $1 a day.
Two thirds of Chelsea High School's famed players visited with USCA Coach Lew Perkins' family in town. Oren Byrd faced a car breakdown caused by a faulty gas gauge during a trip from Orangeburg. Mrs. James Lackey may switch to engineering duties if librarianship ends. A mass casualty drill last week drew praise as well behaved Schofield students participated.
A Rutland Drive railroad crossing is slated to receive a warning signal after a two year delay. State Highway Department official says the project has moved up in priority, with Southern Railway ready to advertise bids and the price around 25 000 dollars for a pair of lights.

An 18 year old Aiken woman Dorothy Hollingsworth faces arson charges after a fire at Mabel Smiths home on Saluda Ave NE. Curtains burned when kerosene was reportedly poured into a window fan an argument preceded the blaze no injuries and moderate damage were reported.
Forecast shows light showers today with cloudiness and a high near 75. Tonight will be fair and cooler around 55. Tomorrow remains sunny and mild with a high near 80 as rain chances drop to 20 percent today and 10 percent tomorrow.
In North Augusta, a daring weekend theft saw a $300 Irish Setter lifted over an eight foot fence at the veterinary office of Dr. James Hawk. The select operation targeted multiple dogs but the setter was the prize. the owner Dr. James filed the complaint with police.
The Aiken Chamber of Commerce seeks city council approval for a phased parkway beautification plan funded by community gifts. A full time supervisor would oversee maintenance with help from the Streets and Sanitation Department, planting azaleas bulbs and shrubs at an estimated maximum of 600 dollars per parkway.
