Senator James Jeffords arrived at the Capitol on Friday and defended his party switch from Republican to independent. GOP leaders prepared to assume new roles amid the political realignment and shifting leadership dynamics.

House and Senate negotiators reached a final agreement on a 10 year, 1.35 trillion dollar tax cut package. It would give individual taxpayers a 300 dollar refund this year and married couples 600 dollars. The plan lowers the top rate from 39.6 to 35 percent, creates a 10 percent bottom rate for the first 6 000 of income for individuals and 12 000 for couples, with rates cut by 3 percentage points overall. First changes take effect July 1, with further phased reductions over six years.
Clarence Small 25 of Ridge Spring faces murder charges after Rodney L Windress 24 of Monetta died from a May 18 stabbing during an argument at Small’s house. Windress died at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Small is jailed at Aiken County Detention Center. Windress funeral set for Sunday at 4 pm in Ridge Spring Monetta Elementary gym with visitation 8 to 4 pm at the school.
Nikki Rhenne Flanigan an 18 year old daughter of Clarence and Mona Flanigan from Aiken High School is chosen as the 21st Annual South Carolina Homecoming Queen. She will compete with contestants from the other 49 states at America's Homecoming Queen Pageant for scholarship money.
Brooks Webster a former Navy ensign called the movie Pearl Harbor extraordinary and not politically skewed at the Aiken premiere. He praised the love story and noted the UT scenes. Webster, his wife Betty and friends Vivian House and Tommy Wooley attended the showing at the Aiken Mall Cinema amid Memorial Day plans in downtown Aiken. Webster served via the V-12 program after Bowdoin and was assigned to the USS Detroit. The Detroit and other war vessels were docked in December 1941.
Memorial Day activities include a downtown Aiken festival at Newberry Festival Center with music food and displays from noon to 3 p.m. An Aiken County Memorial Day Parade starts at Union Street and Park Avenue Saturday at 3 p.m. North Augusta hosts a Memorial Day observance Monday at 11 a.m. at Wade Hampton Veterans Park. A Memorial Service and Honorary Tree Planting will be held June 2 at Horse Creek Midland Valley Veterans Park at 2 p.m.
The May 1918 issue highlights World War I war coverage in Aiken with wire service articles letters from the front and political statements. Local merchants push Liberty Bonds and Stamps while housewives are urged to reduce wheat use and grow vegetables. Red Cross and YMCA activism appear prominently.
