Board reschedules budget hearing and expands gifted program
Aiken County School Board shifted the public budget hearing to June 14 due to delayed state funding information and plans to adopt the budget on June 28. It approved a $20,000 state funds request for the gifted and talented program and authorized Dr. Robert W. Paskel to run the 1983 Summer Technical Enrichment program funded by Du Pont at Savannah River Plant to encourage about 45 minority junior high students toward engineering careers. The board honored 40 retiring employees with 992 total years of service, reported progress on 30 major maintenance projects, and approved new advisory council seats for Area One and Area Two, plus a physical therapy contract with Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center and continued USC-Aiken cooperative education participation.

County budget proposes new landfill fee and other charges
The proposed budget includes a 60 cent per cubic yard landfill fee targeting commercial haulers, a $25 civil papers charge, 25 cent per copy photocopying fee, and funds for a 3 percent cost of living rise plus health premium increases.
