Spenkelink Executed by Florida Electric Chair

John A. Spenkelink, 30, was put to death in Florida State Prison becoming the first person executed in the United States against his will in more than a decade. The 10:18 a.m. death followed a delayed start and a three-hit electric chair procedure witnessed by 32 people.

A Ruthenium 106 leak occurred November 6 1978 at a plutonium separation facility. The DOE report on the plant 1978 monitoring notes the release caused only 0.03 percent of the public radiation limit at three sites and did not affect the public.
