Obama Defends Drones but Warns They Do Not Cure All

President Obama defended drone strikes as a necessary tool in counterterrorism while noting they are not a cure-all and saying he is haunted by unintended civilian deaths. He also pushed to close Guantanamo Bay and to resume prisoner transfers to Yemen, needing Republican help to move detainees to U.S. prisons and try them domestically. He argued terrorism threats will persist even with al-Qaida weakened and the Afghan war ending.

House backs variable rate student loans

The House passed a Republican backed bill linking subsidized Stafford loan rates to financial markets despite a veto threat from President Obama. The measure, 221 to 198, would allow a scheduled rate hike for new loans, while Democrats urged extensions and warned of higher costs to taxpayers. Eight Republicans and four Democrats broke from their parties.

Schools urged to add 60 minutes daily physical activity

The Institute of Medicine calls for PE to become a core subject and at least 60 minutes of daily activity for students. It notes about half of U S children achieve an hour of activity daily and cites No Child Left Behind era cuts to PE, arts, and recess as reducing overall activity. The panel links rising obesity, 17 percent of youths, to sedentary school days and says schools are key to improving fitness.
