Hodges Signs Flag Bill Ending State Dome Confederate Flag

Gov Jim Hodges signed a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the State House dome by July 1 moving it to the State Museum. A single square battle flag will fly at the Confederate Soldier Monument near the Capitol and overlook an African American History Monument. The change ends South Carolina's 38 year banner display above the Capitol.

Mother pleads guilty in child death case

Accused child killer Rebecca Cowart admitted guilt to homicide on Tuesday, abdicating trial for her 15 month old daughter's death. Her boyfriend Michael Smith faces trial for the same April 1999 death.

Smith wins District 83 seat in South Carolina House

Don Smith, a Republican from North Augusta, captured the District 83 seat with 1 679 votes to 600 for Rev. Nathaniel Irvin. Certification followed, with Smith planning to be sworn in by early next week and to study pending legislation for the session’s final weeks.

Aiken County Board fills two admin posts on Tuesday

Joyce L. Thompson and Joanne Skillman won unanimous backing for assistant principal at South Aiken High and principal at Warrenville Elementary. Thompson brings two degrees from South Carolina State University and has taught at Orangeburg Wilkerson High since 1997. Skillman, longtime Aiken educator, has been assistant principal at East Aiken Elementary since 1996 and previously taught in multiple states and districts. The board postponed two principal hires for Wagener Salley High and North Augusta High.

South Carolina quarter released in 50 State Quarters program

The South Carolina quarter, eighth in the series, commemorates statehood on May 23 1788. The design features a Palmetto Tree, a Carolina Wren, and Yellow Jessamine with an outline of the state and a star for Columbia. The Palmetto Tree honors Revolutionary War defense of Charleston Harbor.
