Marines Land Near Hue in New Vietnam Phase

About 2,000 South Vietnamese Marines were landed by amphibious craft and helicopters north of Hue, clashing seven miles east of Quang Tri. The operation followed heavy U S air strikes on North Vietnamese targets in Haiphong as part of a renewed bombing campaign. 133 enemy troops were reported killed and two tanks destroyed.

Soldiers gun down Ecuadorian hijacker in airliner

In Quito a group of soldiers crawled into the baggage compartment of a hijacked Electra turboprop and machine gunned the hijacker to death. It marked the second air piracy thwarted by gunfire this month. The hijacker, named Lomas, took control of the plane after it departed Quito for Guayaquil.

Irish Catholics Vote To End Violence

In Londonderry’s Creggan district a 2000 strong Catholic crowd urged an end to IRA violence. They booed IRA hecklers and blocked a chieftain from speaking as a priest proclaimed love for Protestant neighbors and a desire for peaceful coexistance.

Valley Highway widening 57 percent complete in Horse Creek Valley

The 9.5 mile Route 421 widening through Horse Creek Valley is 57 percent done with completion planned for late fall or early winter. Phase one, from Steifeltown road to Langley, finished in 1971 at $721,570, and phase two covers 4.9 miles from Langley to U.S. 125. Knox Rivers Construction Co. is handling the current work at $963,237 amid local complaints about lawn and parking loss.

Chance Of Thundershowers Predicted Through Week

Aiken area forecast from the U S Weather Bureau calls for partly cloudy skies with a chance of thundershowers through the week end. Lows around the mid 50s, highs near the mid 80s, and northeasterly winds of about 10 mph easing to light and variable at night. The outlook shows variable cloudiness and scattered afternoon and evening showers through Sunday.

Education Change Sought by University Leader

University of South Carolina President Thomas F. Jones called for reforms in education at the 55th annual Aiken County Red Cross meeting. He said schooling has become too uniform and that many students graduate with low reading levels while colleges train teachers in old methods. He noted Gov. West requested 150000 to fund an experimental school for teacher training as USC works on changes.
