For the second time in a week Unit 2 at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant automatically shut down. The 12:28 a.m. EDT event occurred during transmitter calibration when one transmitter indicated low water flow and a second trip signal from another transmitter triggered the shutdown.
Myrtle Beach merchants report the last two weekends drew the largest pre Memorial Day crowds ever as thousands of tourists pack area motels and beaches. Gary Loftus says warm weather and more rooms helped, with weekend temperatures in the high 80s and many hotels fully booked.

The departure of Janos Kadar as Hungary's Communist Party leader showed open criticism of his policies and the bloc's orderly power transfers. Kadar, who led the party 32 years, stepped down as general secretary at a three day conference and was named to a ceremonial post as party president. Premier Karoly Grosz, 57, became new party leader and may push reform while Kadar stays as president.
Washington AP panel of political civic and education leaders including former Presidents Ford and Carter says the nation is moving backward in achieving equality of opportunity for blacks Hispanics and American Indians. The commission chaired by Cornell University president Rhodes releases One Third of a Nation calling for renewed efforts, broader affirmative action and a national consensus to close economic educational and social gaps.
In a pre summit interview Gorbachev said a long range nuclear weapons treaty could be signed by January but disputes over Star Wars would not be set aside. He defended glasnost, condemned a dissident as a parasite, and floated a joint U.S. Soviet Mars trip.
