Aiken County Council approves a balanced 1984 85 budget with no tax increase yet warns two items could push it into the red. The council begins budget discussions tonight at 6 in the council building. The plan keeps 42.5 mills and totals 12 618 849 dollars while May 10 spending stood at 12 056 962 dollars.

Audio Response System piloted in Aiken

Southern Bell unveils a new directory assistance method in Aiken where an operator locates information and a recorded voice announces the answer. Two Stadium Committees Seek Board Help in Aiken County

Midland Valley and Silver Bluff stadium committees asked the Aiken County Board of Education for financial assistance to build new fields. Wall cited a 419000 goal with 140000 raised and a 6000 seat minimum for AAAA play, while Hanna sought 200000 in addition to 76000 raised for Silver Bluff’s 3000 seat stadium. The board will review figures by the June meeting and recognized 46 retirees and student awardees at the session.

Psychiatric Facility Plans in Aiken Put On Hold

Applications for three new psychiatric facilities in Aiken County are paused as DHEC imposes a 90 day moratorium on certificate of need reviews. Cigarettes Blamed for Lung Diseases in New Surgeon General Report

The Surgeon General named cigarette smoking as the primary cause of chronic obstructive lung disease including bronchitis and emphysema, estimating up to 90 percent of 60 000 COPD deaths in 1983. Tobacco smoke exposure for non smokers needs more study, as evidence remains inconclusive.
