City officials push for a pair of ordinances to fund a planned roads program. If approved, a $20 vehicle maintenance fee on city titled vehicles and a 5 percent utilities franchise fee would affect residents, with a June 13 council vote and public hearing.
The City of Aiken weighs a per vehicle maintenance tax alongside the county’s 20 dollar fee. City owns 90 of 367 miles with 277 miles held by county or state. The new city fee would apply to 23 600 titled vehicles but would not fund repairs on downtown Park Avenue Laurens Street Whiskey or Dougherty roads.
The city considers two ordinances to fund roads. A $20 annual vehicle maintenance fee would be charged on vehicles titled in Aiken to support road upkeep. A utilities franchise fee would rise from 3 percent to 5 percent, with the increase passed to consumers to fund traffic safety and new road construction.
