South Carolina jobless rate falls to 11.6 percent in April
The April unemployment rate in South Carolina dropped to 11.6 percent, the third consecutive monthly decline, though experts say growth remains weak. The labor force shrank by over 6,000 as hospitality hiring boosted the month by 8,800 jobs while construction fell by 2,800. Marlboro County led with 19.5 percent unemployment. Beaufort County posted 7.3 percent, the state’s low. All counties improved month over month. The March/April release follows Gov. Sanford’s appointment of John L. Finan to head the new workforce agency through 2011.
