Man dies after being struck by train at rail crossing

A Gloverville man identified as Carol Wood Jr of Rabbit Hill Drive was killed early Sunday when a Norfolk Southern train struck him at the Pleasure Island Road crossing. The coroner said Wood, 38, was found on the tracks around 1:55 a.m. and autopsy was planned in Newberry. A note found at the scene remains undisclosed.

Celtic Music on Tap at Hopelands Gardens Concert

Light Rain Little Help in CSRA Drought

Light showers Sunday offered minimal relief to drought in the CSRA. Forecaster Allen Weber noted at Savannah River Site Weather Center rainfall peaked at two tenths of an inch. Aiken County residents endure nearly six inches since March while AccuWeather meteorologists note scant moisture.

Family survives bridge collapse in North Augusta

North Augusta family on the Lowe's Motor Speedway overpass was on the collapsed pedestrian bridge that sent 107 racing fans to hospitals after the NASCAR All-Star event. Terrell Kearse suffered two broken legs and a back injury, Deb­bie and Pam were scratched and injured, Michael was uninjured.

Seniors deliver meals for Meals on Wheels at Trinity Home

Trinity Lutheran Home residents assist with Meals on Wheels two to three Fridays monthly under the Aiken Area Council on Aging. Nancy Kneece notes time limits cap more deliveries while Pauline Pycraft and Tom Connaghan join two others on a single Friday route of about 10 stops. Volunteers say delivering meals provides outdoor activity, new friends, and mutual encouragement as the program continues weekly across the region.

Voters head to polls for SC House special election

North Augusta voters return to the polls Tuesday to choose a successor for the unexpired term of former Rep. Scott Beck. Republican Don Smith and Democrat Nathaniel Irvin compete to fill the seat, with the winner serving until the November general election as the current session nears its early June close.
