Retiring Aiken High art teacher Lynn Pope honored

Aiken County School District honors Lynn Pope and fellow retirees at the sixth annual district dinner. Pope, longtime Aiken High art teacher, plans to pursue her own art while cherishing memories of teaching ninth graders and collaborating with Merilyn Smith on Italy exchanges. She will join students on a late June trip to Orvieto.

Governor funds two Aiken juvenile justice programs

Governor Sanford awarded $92,111 in grants from the US Department of Justice to two Aiken County juvenile justice programs. The Aiken Juvenile Drug Court will receive $48,137 and the New Ellenton School Resource Officer Program $43,974. The drug court, led by Judge Larry Inabinet, aims to provide counseling instead of criminal records for simple drug possession, while the New Ellenton program, started in 2002 by Chief Van McMillan and led by Officer Alesia Parks, focuses on reducing juvenile offenses through school-based intervention.
