At 4 40 a m two men entered Greg's Gas Plus in North Augusta one with a hammer demanded cash the clerk fled and the second took beer both fled in a blue pickup. The first suspect wore a black ski mask and white boxer shorts with blue stripes.
Lt. Gov. Bob Peeler told Aiken GOP supporters at a luncheon that he would eliminate property taxes. Attorney General candidate Charlie Condon supported the idea but did not attend. Former Rep. Mark Sanford and Lee GOP criticized the plan.
A cold front brought unseasonable May chill from Mississippi to the Carolinas. Temperatures dipped into the 40s in Columbia with highs in the 60s. Forecasters warned the cool spell would linger midweek as northern air settled behind the front and clear calm nights aided frost risk.
