About 200 Lao students seized the U S aid agency headquar ters in Vientiane and held two American Marines and a civilian behind the gates. The students offered to release the captives if they would surrender, but all three refused.
In Tehran terrorists killed two U.S. Air Force officers as they were driven to work. The embassy named Lt. Col. Paul R. Shafer Jr. of Dayton Ohio and Lt. Col. Jack J. Turner of Carbondale Indiana as the victims. Both were married with children.
Washington reports April consumer prices rose six tenths of a percent reversing a two month grocery decline. The April uptick exceeded March and marked the largest rise since January, though still well below 1974 inflation levels. The White House cautioned against assuming March’s rate would persist.
The House passed a $5 billion emergency employment bill by a 313 to 86 vote to support construction and public works. It would provide federal grants to states and tribes for quick local projects with no state or local funding required, sending the measure to the Senate.
Palestinian guerrillas and Phalange forces clashed in Beirut suburb Dekwaneh despite a cease-fire. Police report five dead and over 40 wounded as grenades and rockets hit streets and refugee camps. Merchants called a 48 hour strike and schools closed across areas. In Sidon two small boats blown up.
The Aiken County Board votes to appropriate 36 050 dollars to buy 85 acres between Wagener Salley and Perry for an eastern landfill though only 45 acres have DHEC approval. Owner reneged on timber rights for half the property and discussion continues on terms.
Finance Director James A. Donovan expected to resign by June 15 as commissioners push ordinances uniting purchasing agent and finance director roles into one county finance coordinator. The 5-2 vote faced GOP protests with critics warning of audit risk and misappropriation dangers.
The Aiken County PSA weighs a $150 000 interim North Augusta sewer plant as an option until theHorse Creek project is completed. Judge Julius B Ness holds the final say on building the facility while DHEC calls for a stripped plan review. A meeting with Ness and PSA attorney Garvin is planned in Columbia for May 27.
In General Sessions Court a housebreaking case unfolds around a 38 caliber revolver stolen from Rogers Tire. Witnesses trace the gun through a chain: Bruce Spradley bought it for 30 dollars, resold to James Toole for 35, Toole sold to Louise Corley for 60 in beer value, Corley sold to W E Dicks Jr, who tested it and later traded it to Lawrence Cobbler for a saddle. The traveling gun is sought to be presented as evidence by the Aiken City Police.
The forecast calls for clear skies with no rain expected today tonight or tomorrow The stretch of fair weather should continue through Friday and Saturday with highs in the low 70s and tonight’s low around 65 degrees.
North Augusta council awards contracts totaling 2 030 000 for sewerage network and trunk lines feeding the Horse Creek Valley Plant. Low bids from J and L Excavating, W L Cary, Brown Construction, and Brown Steel Contractors are noted with funding from federal grants and state loans. Completion expected in one to two years. A rezoning decision for 124 acres near West Martin town Road is approved for future development.
