Aiken County Council proposes 2.4 millage hike in 2015-16 budget
The council unanimously approved a $62.7 million budget with a first vote on a 2.4 millage increase raising the rate to 72.3 mills from 69.9. The amendment could generate about $1.5 to $1.6 million annually, adding about $14.40 more on a $150,000 home. Final approval awaits two more readings and a public hearing.

Author probes former King's ties with Aiken in royal link
Best selling author Andrew Morton seeks material for a potential book on Herman Rogers. Morton, known for Diana biography, emailed the Aiken Standard May 5 detailing Rogers’ ties to King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. Rogers helped advise the abdication and, with his wife, arranged the Windsor marriage in France. The pair owned Rye Patch in Aiken where the Duke and Duchess reportedly stayed December 1, 1938.

Suspicious death investigated at Glendale Terrace Apartments
Aiken Department of Public Safety confirmed a midday death at Glendale Terrace Apartments on York Street. Lauren McKinney, 28, of Aiken, was found dead. coroner Tim Carlton called it out of the ordinary and SLED investigators were brought in. An autopsy is scheduled in Newberry as the case remains under investigation.
