Caregivers face greater stress caring for spouses than parents
Aging America finds people over 40 already act as caregivers to relatives or friends. Six in ten have helped a parent, mostly a mother, while 14 percent cared for a spouse or partner. Spousal caregiving strengthens bonds for many but heightens family stress and physical strain as dementia advances. Virginia Brumley cared for her 79 year old husband Jim for nearly five years before nursing home care was needed.
