Bid to build major facility at Savannah River Research Campus
Aiken County moves to award a bid for a three story research center frame at the Savannah River Research Campus. The project is funded by 3 million in county bonds and 1.25 million from the Department of Commerce. Groundbreaking expected the first week of June with a bid timeline through June 14. The 422 acre site on U.S. 278 near the Savannah River Site was donated by Westinghouse Savannah River Co. Local and national speakers are being invited for the ceremony.

Beech Island authorities seek a black man in the Thursday robbery of First Citizens Bank. Lt Tim Hoffman of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Dept says the suspect used a semi automatic handgun and wore layered clothing including a two color hooded jersey, dark pants, and a Dallas Cowboys cap. He stood about 5 8 to 5 10 and weighed 160 to 180 pounds. The heist occurred around 11 24 a.m. with eight employees and two customers present. no injuries were reported and the suspect remained inside about two minutes.
