West Columbia area WOCENES presents a boys soccer lower state final at Brookland Cayce as South Aiken meets Brookland Cayce at 7 30 p m. The game features top teams in Class AAA and determines the champion.
Augusta GreenJackets pitchers combine for a two hit shutout. Savannah Sand Gnats fall 3-0 at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The win extends Augusta’s streak to four and marks a second straight shutout against Savannah.
Hilton Head Island saw South Aiken dominate 3-0 as Madison Lightbody posted a fourth straight playoff shutout. Savannah Breakiron Maggie Bosley and Amanda Harris scored while South Aiken extended its winning streak to 11 and earned a shot at the state title in Columbia. The Lady T-Breds will face Riverside in the final after routing opponents 26-0 across four playoff games.
South Aiken forged a 3-1 win in game one of the Class AAA state championship series against Lugoff Elgin. Andrew Faulkner allowed four hits and one run over six plus, fanning 12 to earn the win for the T-Breds. Lugoff Elgin’s Forrest Koumas pitched well in defeat, while Blake Outlaw and Nick Mincey sparked late threats before Faulkner closed it out. The series moves to Lugoff Elgin for game two Wednesday with SAHS ace Stephen Leopard set to start.
Mike Pelfrey pitched 7 2 3 innings to lift the New York Mets over Atlanta 3-2 ending a five game losing streak. Rod Barajas drove in two runs with a double, Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez closed out the win as New York moved from last to within a half game of Atlanta in the NL East. Mets executive remarks preceded the game amid questions about team management.
South Aiken High School seeks a second straight Class AAA state crown as it journeys to Brookland Cayce High School for a 7 30 p m playoff. The Thoroughbreds and Bearcats, both 8 2 in region play, split their season series with a 2 0 loss at South Aiken and a 2 1 overtime win by South Aiken in Cayce.
