Thunderstorms hit Aiken area with power outages

Weather thundershowers swept through the CSRA on Saturday evening causing power cuts in Aiken and surrounding areas. The Aiken Department of Public Safety staffed downtown intersections as outages disrupted signals and alarms, with gusts up to 35 mph felling tree limbs and prompting repairs by South Carolina Electric & Gas crews. About 2,700 customers in Aiken and nearby counties lost power.

Aiken area pools open for summer as parents and children return. Centers for Disease Control warns about 4000 drownings yearly in the United States, including about 1000 children under 14, with 77 percent of tragedies occurring within five minutes of disappearing. Lifeguard Ben Harm urges constant adult supervision and refresher water safety, stressing locked doors and limited access for young children when adults are away. Graham Sees Senate Rich With Opportunity After Marathon Session

Senator Lindsey Graham spoke after a 19 hour day and a TV circuit tour about the Bush tax cut plan. He noted the marathon session set a Senate record for votes and said seniority matters but media presence can shift power. He backed the $400 billion tax cut, arguing it would create jobs.

Thousands join Jackson in Greenville march for King Day

More than 3,000 protesters, led by Rev. Jesse Jackson and NAACP President Kweisi Mfume, marched two miles in Greenville to urge the county council to establish a paid King Day holiday for employees. The rally marked Brown v Board anniversary and aims to reignite civil rights efforts with voter drives and prison and education reforms.
