The North Augusta City Council plans Monday action to annex about 500 acres upriver from the present limits. The area would boost the city size by around 10 percent, with most land slated for R-3 residential use and light industry. The council session followed a 54 minute study discussion.
Richard Phillip Beard a 35 year old Langley mechanic announced plans to run for seat 7 an at large post on the Aiken County Board of Education. The election is Nov 6 incumbent Rod Greenway seeks re election. Beard is a Langley graduate and has served on local boards and advisory councils. Greenway a transportation supervisor seeks re election.
Dr. Bruce W. Karrh said Savannah River Plant workers show no relationship between leukemia or lung cancer and radiation exposure. He cited a 1980 case control study comparing SRP leukemia patients with nonleukemic workers, finding no correlation to radiation and noting higher than expected cancer counts earlier.
The Department of Energy will decide by June 25 whether to restart the L Reactor at SRP. The final environmental impact statement supports a cooling lake option to meet water quality standards, with a $25 million construction cost and $3.4 million annual maintenance. Environmental groups oppose restarting due to wetlands impact on 1000 acres.
The Commerce Department reports the U S economy expanded at 8.8 percent in Q1 1984, the fastest since 1982. Revisions point to higher inventory investment and stronger consumer spending while a worsening trade deficit trimmed gains.
Clemson Extension agent Tom Earle says frost danger is down but hail could ruin crops. Peach Council president Larry Younce and Johnston growers anticipate an adequate to average crop next week. They cite wet spring and past years’ losses as ongoing concerns for price and recoveries.
